Although Dr Lokugamage works in both general and high risk obstetrics at the Whittington Hospital, London, She has also set up a Maternity Acupuncture service within the NHS. She also has a keen interest in improving rates of natural birth and had a homebirth herself in 2008. Her experience of homebirth led to her writing a book called The Heart in the Womb. Dr Lokugamage does not practice private obstetrics.
This service is part of a maternity service that offers a holistic spectrum of services which include high risk obstetrics as well as a birth centre and an excellent homebirth team whose ethos is to help normalise birth. The maternity acupuncture service employs several qualified maternity acupuncturists to assist women throughout all stages of their pregnancy. The service has improved the women’s journey within the hospital and has added an extra dimension of choice, symptom reduction and healing for women.
We offered tailored patient-centred acupuncture treatment of for conditions where there is pre-existing preliminary positive published research findings e.g. back pain, tension headache, migraine, anxiety/depression, insomnia, hyperemesis/constipation, birth preparation, intrapartum pain relief, and breech version.
We hope that this service option helps to empower women because it seeks to promote self healing mechanisms within the patient. We aspire to reduce women’s feeling of vulnerability when they have pregnancy disorders because they have another tool that may reduce the medicalisation of childbirth or be an adjunct to medical/surgical treatment.
